Emmanuel Church, Mumbai.

The Church was established on 10.1.1869 in a thickly populated residential area of Girgaon. The church was recently renovated at a cost of Rs. 18 Lakhs and inaugurated in January 2006. The members worshipping here are mostly living in the Western Suburb. Some of the popular Priests who served in this Marathi Congregation have been Rev. V. H. Gadre, Rev. M. R. Pagar, Rev. Bhalerao, Rev. N. R. Makasre and Rev. F. S. Ramlal.

There are memorial plaques of the following that are placed in the church in living memory.


  • Joshep Jefferson
  • Solicitor of the High Court Mumbai
  • April 1821 to 4th of May 1891
  • James Gottfried Deimler
  • Who laboured as a C.M.S. Missionary amongst the Muhammadans of this city
  • For upwards forty  years, April 2nd 1827 to Dec. 30th 1899
  • Henry Tootill
  • Born at Manchester England May 23rd 1835 to September 2nd 1904
  • Joseph Jackson for 33yrs connected with the Robert Money School C.M.S., Born at Crantham Lincolnshire April 17th 1839, Entered into Rest Bombay October 24th 1901
  • Charles Earnest Simmonds, Born at Barnest 8th September 1837, Died at Panchgani 3rd August 1903 Memory of Twin Brothers Born at East Knole Wilts 13th December 1804

Rev. George Candy Died at Bath 31st January 1869 Major Thomas Candy C.S.I., Died at Mahableshwar 27th Feb 1877, Both were Earnest Supporters of the C.M.S, The former Secretary from 1850 to 1857, The latter as a member of the corresponding committee Mumbai and Friends of the above as taken of love and esteem.

Erected by many friends in the Loving remembrance of David Lucas Joshi, Born on May 8th 1884, Ordained 1893, in Bombay from 1896 till his death on October 25th 1923. He  served as a pastor to the C.M.S Marathi congregation. Became Canon of St. Thomas Cathedral
